Preparing You for Your Interpreter Certification Online
Why Should I Consider Earning Certified Interpreter Credentials?
Elevate your career opportunities and earning potential with a respected industry certification.
Completing training programs that result in a certificate in interpreting is an excellent first step to preparing for work as an interpreter and building a professional career as a language interpreter.
Earning industry certification enables you to provide potential employers with evidence of your skills, knowledge and competence. These respected credentials can open additional doors of opportunity and earning potential throughout your career. We can help you prepare for this invaluable next step.
It’s important to understand the difference between a certificate earned from an interpreting training organization (such as The Interpreter's Lab) and attaining Certified status obtained from a recognized professional body. In Canada, acquiring a Certified title, as a medical, community or court interpreter, can only be granted by an affiliate member organization of the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC), and requires passing a certification exam.
Understanding the Skills Assessment vs. the Certification Process
Choose the right certification for your career path
There are two interpreter exams in Canada that lead to advanced recognition in the industry.
1. The Community Interpreter Language and Interpreting Skills Assessment Tool (CILISAT)
Developed in 1994 by the non-profit organization Cultural Interpretation Services for Our Communities, CILISAT measures the ability to sight translate written text and interpret spoken dialogue in one of 50 languages.
Understanding the Skills Assessment vs. the Certification Process
2. Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC)
A federation of seven provincial bodies, the CTTIC oversees local administration of various interpreting industry exams across Canada (except in Quebec), including exams in community interpreting, conference interpreting, court interpreting, medical interpreting and terminology.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW
These Assessments and Certifications are not mandatory for students but are highly recommended as a positive addition and qualification to your interpreting portfolio.
